For the umpteenth time, why would they add these all-caps comments, with "*******" around them, except to warn team members that this is rudimentary "hypothesis testing" code of some sort that should not be used as final code?

The contrarians don't have anything if they can't show published data was falsified. The fact is that if you look at the relevant papers, these artificial tree-ring corrections were not applied, and the researchers admit there's a divergence between real temperatures and tree-ring reconstructions starting in the 1960s.

Persuasively argued, except for point #3 ("Hacking into private computer files is illegal") in my opinion. This deflects attention away from IT support and the email account holders and amounts to saying to the hackers "that's not fair!" If the perpetrators are caught, the legal interpretation will be closer to mischief than industrial espionage. The damage has been done, and the legal recourses are limited. The best bet is to increase security protocols, improve users' security practices and move to encryted email. We're all guilty in being lax with the security of our email (http://ur1.ca/gjiz), but most of us aren't dealing in highly charged settings at the interface of science and public policy. When you play in that arena, your social responsibilities are heightened whether you like it or not.
